  2. Lt. Henry evolves from a self-centered anti-hero at the beginning stages of A Farewell to Arms, and eventually becomes a more evolved individual through his life experiences.
  3. One critic has called Hemingway's novel "a parable of 20th century man's disgust and disillusionment at the failure of civilization to achieve the ideals it had been promising throughout the 19th century;" while others tend to see the novel as a contrast between two different types of 20th century life, symbolized by the chaos of war and the serenity of peace.
