Summer Essay

Don't forget about you summer assignment essay! Please get a start on this now... and don't procrastinate until the day before. If you have questions, please email me. I know the topics are hard but I want to get a feel for where each of you are in your writing abilities. Give it your best effort - DON'T PLAGIARIZE - cite your sources when needed and make sure you are using proper MLA format! See you all in September!

Prompt Choices:
  1. For Hemingway's hero the traditional external sanctions of religion and similar cultural values have disappeared. They have been replaced by a concern of how a man shall live and die on a planet where the essential condition is violence. Analyze the role of heroism throughout the novel.
  2. Lt. Henry evolves from a self-centered anti-hero at the beginning stages of A Farewell to Arms, and eventually becomes a more evolved individual through his life experiences.
  3. One critic has called Hemingway's novel "a parable of 20th century man's disgust and disillusionment at the failure of civilization to achieve the ideals it had been promising throughout the 19th century;" while others tend to see the novel as a contrast between two different types of 20th century life, symbolized by the chaos of war and the serenity of peace. Discuss the theme of disillusionment in Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms.

Please follow these guidelines:
  • paper MUST be in proper MLA format
  • double spaced, 12 pt. font - Times new Roman, Georgia or Arial
  • NO cover page - follow MLA
  • (3) quotes from the novel need to be used to support your ideas
  • original title, thesis and paragraph formats must be recognizable
  • no use of personal pronouns
  • always discuss literature in present tense
  • correct grammar, spelling, punctuation
  • be consistent and stay on topic!
