How does Catherine’s progression (physical and mental) change throughout her stay in the hospital? How does Henry react to her various stages and ultimately, her death? Why do you believe that Hemingway creates this reaction?

  1. We see a great change in Catherine Barkley near the end of the book. Physically she is not doing so well as she tries to give birth to the baby. But mentally she does not seem to have much trouble. She does talk to Lt.Henry even though she is in pain. So clearly she is mentally okay untill the time she talks to him before she dies then she starts to panic.

Throughout the birth process we see Lt.Henry react in many ways to how Catherine Barkley is doing. He fears when the surgery to get the baby out that she might die, you hear him repeating "what if she dies, she wont die, but what if she does?". So that does tell us he is very concerned about how she is doing throughout the various stages. But when she does dies he reacts by yelling at the nurses, going into the room, turning off the lights, leaving the room, and just walking in the rain back to the hotel even though the doctor offered to give him a ride. In that sense Ernest Hemingway created this reaction to portray not only how depressed he was and upset but to show why it was raining in the book. After all Catherine Barkley did say she feared the rain because it reminded her of death and she did die when it was raining so it kinda was sad because she said she did not fear the rain when she was with Lt.Henry but when he was their and it was raining she died so that scenery created the reaction of how sad her death was.

  3. KeAndra Porchia Post #3:Towards the the end of the novel while Catherine is staying in the hospital we see some changes in her character. Mentally, she is fine and demonstrates that she is mentally stable as she talks to Henry while in labor. Physically, Catherine is not doing so well. After giving birth to her baby boy she starts hemmeraging. This causes Henry and Catherine to fear that she might die.

Henry shows many diffferent reactions throught these various stages of Catherines labor. For the most part, Henry is concerned about Catherine and how she is doing. He becomes afraid that Catherine might die and he may loss the love of his life. When Catherine does die Henry is filled with a lot of pain and is very upset, although he never shows this. They say that he walks in the rain back to his hotel.I believe Hemingway creates this reaction to symbolize how death and the rain was related in the novel. Catherine had been afraid of the rain and she would sometimes see herself dead in it.The rains states that Catherine was really gone.

Catherine was doing so well before she had to go to the hospital. As her stay in the hospital went on, her situation began to get worst. She had a very hard time with the birth of the baby which really stressed her out; sharp pains came to her constantly, she wanted the gas more and more consistantly, and she got a hemorrhage. Mentally you can tell that she was very afraid for Lt. Henry, the baby, and herself. She talked her "husband" down, but it seems as if she was trying to reassure herself also.

Henry has a variety of reactions when it comes to Catherine's difficult stages. Boldly, you can see that he is scared. He is not sittting still, he is praying, he is repeating his words to make himself feel better, and as always, he has many drinks. In the end, as a reaction to Chatherine's death, he goes on a rampage; he yells at the nurses, and is very rude to the doctor. Then, in the rain, Lt. Henry walks home alone. This reacton was created by he author because it ties the story together. A very significant part of the story is when Catherine talks about rain which is foreshadowing. Physically he did not die; but a part of him inside died because he lost what made him the happiest; he lost his woman, his wife, his love, his heart, and his soul.

When Catherine comes into the hospital, physically she is not doing well because she is trying to deliver her baby. Mentally she has no difficulties because she talks with Frederic, but when she starts to hemorrhage she falls into a state of panic. She starts to panic because she cannot talk to Frederic since she is dying. Catherine is not in a good state of mind before she dies because her baby dies from getting strangled by the umbilical cord. Everything that she hoped for and was happy about was taken away from her in a second and she was disappointed and overwhelmed with losing her baby. Catherine is definitely not good overall in her mental and physical state.
Frederic does not have any feelings for the baby because all of his feelings were focused on Catherine because he does not want her to die. He is very concerned throughout the whole time that Catherine is giving birth hoping that she does not die. Frederic has no feelings for the baby because he believes the baby killed Catherine, the love of his life. When Catherine dies Frederic reacts with anger by yelling at the nurses, leaving the room and going out into the rain. Hemingway creates this reaction to show that Frederic is sad and upset. Catherine said that she was afraid of the rain except when she was with Frederic because she thought that he would protect her. The sad thing is that Catherine dies when it is raining and Frederic is there with her, so this shows that her death was depressing for Frederic.

Catherine's progresseion in the hospital changed from her being happy, to being very much in pain. She wanted to be very brave for Henry. She wanted to make him very happy, so she tryed her best to very strong. She used all of her strength, and it wore her out. While giving birth, she just got weaker and weaker.

Catherine would have various changes in her mood. At one moment she would be very happy and brave and at the other very weak. She wanted all the pain to go away and she knew she was dieing. She tryed hardest to fight and she didn't want Henry to be upset. So she would try to make him go and do things and she would tell him she's okay. Though he would react by saying i will in a little bit, because he wanted to be there with her. Henry knew she was dieing and he wasn't ready to let go of her.

When she couldn't hold on any longer and she became unconscious. The nurses didn't want to let Henry in. Henry didn't take no for an answer though and told them all to get out. He said it didn't really matter though, it was like saying goodbye to a statue. I think Hemingway creates this reaction to show that she's really gone, and Henry felt like he had gone too. There love was real, and it was very strong and that alone took a lot of strength out of the both of them, because they had to go through a lot to be together.

As the end of the book comes near Catherine's
character goes through dramatic changes. Physically she is in massive pain trying to deliver her baby. Mentally she shows no downfall and is able to talk to Henry even though she is in great pain. Catherine and Henry feel that her giving birth to a child can cause her to lose her own life. She is very weakened by this and is losing hope.

Lt. Henry feels a lot of emotions or reactions due to Catherine being in labor. He feels that she will die after the birth of the child. He repeats himself asking is she is going to die, that she can not die. The rain falling and Catherine passing showed that he was not able to keep control of himself going berserk by yelling at all the nurses. Henry feels he lost himself with Catherine gone, and Hemingway showed this to us as he was walking around in the rain sad, and furious. We can notice forshadowing coming into the end of the book. How Catherine had said she sees herself dead in the rain.

  9. Asek Hussain Post #3: Catherine’s progression went from good and happy to pain. Physically, she is struggling giving birth to the baby. Mentally, she is ok having Lt. Henry beside her and talking to him. Catherine got weaker and the pain got worse while trying to deliver the baby, but eventually she delivered a stillborn baby boy. The effects of the stillborn causes Catherine to go in to hemorrhage and she dies.

Lt. Henry showed different reactions when Catherine went into labor. He was mostly concerned for the health of Catherine and showed less morale for the baby. Henry is afraid of losing Catherine and goes on a rampage by yelling at the nurses and going overboard with his drinking. I believe Hemmingway created this reaction to show why the rain was a big part of the story as it foreshadowed Catherine’s death. Hemmingway also used this reaction to show how weak and depressed Lt. Henry.

  10. Ashlee Frizzell post 3: At the end of the book Catharine and Lt. Henry are going through a lot. Catharine goes into labor and is in so much pain that she can not make it through the delivery alive. Her physical progression led to her passing but in her mental progression was very slim. She was very aware of everything around her including Lt. Henry. Even though Catharine might have known she might not have made it she wanted so badly to stay with Henry that she held on until the end.
During Catharine’s stay at the hospital Henry is very concerned about her. At the beginning he is worried that she’ll die during surgery . Henry is also scared that the love of his life will be gone forever and he’ll never see her again. Finally, when Catharine is gone, he goes right into denying it and getting really upset over it. I think Hemmingway shows this side of Henry because he wanted to show us how he’s changed throughout the novel.

  11. Samadul Chowdhury post 3: Catherine, the love of Frederick Henry's life goes through a large physical and mental change as she goes through labor while at the hospital. Catherine begins at a normal state of mind and a regular physical state as she begins labor. As she goes on through labor and it starts taking a long time she begins panicking, and as for her physical state she starts breathing in more of the gas to lessen the pain. I believe Catherine's attempt at keeping the baby small by drinking beer was fore shadowing that Catherine would have a very painful and hard time giving birth.
While Catherine is giving birth, Henry was concerned about her. We know this as a fact because we read that Henry couldn't sit still, he drank alcoholic beverages, and he prayed a lot although he didn't have a religion, which is how Hemingway shows how worried he is for Catherine. He was very concerned about if she would live through the process, and not very concerned if the baby would survive. He panicked more and more every time he came by and saw how Catherine was doing because she was in a worse condition every time. When Henry experiences Catherine's death he tells all of the nurses to get out of the operating room in rage and says good bye to Catherine's dead corpse, he notes that it was like saying good bye to a statue because there was no life in her. Hemingway creates this to symbolize the relationship between rain and death, which is what Catherine thought of when she saw the rain.

  12. Seyadul Chowdhury Post #3: As Catherine progresses through labor the reader can grasp her faltering in her strength. Physically, she begins having a difficult time delivering the child. Mentally, Catherine starts off firm and robust with faith in herself. As her time in the hospital elapses, the reader sees a decline in both her physical and mental health. Climatically, her self-confidence is eliminated and she starts to panic, finally asking Henry "Do you think I'll ever have this baby?" (Hemingway 318)
Through the duration of Catherine's stay at the hospital, the Lieutenant is seen having a number of reactions at her various stages of labor. When Henry first arrives at the hospital he is concerned and nervous, Catherine realizes this and tells him to go get something to eat. Each time he comes back to check on Catherine, things start looking worse. When Lt. Henry is critically hit by reality he questions whether Catherine will survive or perish. Ms. Barkley successfully delivers a stillborn baby and begins hemorrhaging. As she slowly slips away Henry stays beside her till death. Finally, he rids the room of nurses, shuts the door and turns off the light. Henry says his last good-bye to the still, lifeless corpse and describes it as a "statue". Afterwards, he leaves the hospital in the rain. Hemingway creates this reaction to conclude Catherine Barkley's death, with her only fear.

  13. During Catherine stay in the hospital, she mentally kept herself and Lt. Henry’s sprits up with the talk of their future together. While the hold time the labor pains was physically tearing her body apart, causing her hemorrhage. At this moment Catherine state of mend change to being fill with panic and fear of losing what she hold dear, her baby and the man she loved. Mentally she trying to keep Lt. Henry calm, while lying to herself that everything will be all right.

Lt. Henry handle Catherine ordeal the best way he can with a drink in hand, as his emotions was forever changing up one minute and down the next. He went from concerned of her well being, too scared, when Catherine started to hemorrhaging. Too hope, when the doctors agree to give her a caesarean. He had to deal with fear, when the doctors couldn’t save her life and Catherine knew she was going to die. Lt. Henry ‘s emotions and world came crushing down with the loss of Catherine. He blamed the doctors and nurses, and the baby (who died), for Catherine’s death.

Ernest Hemingway made this reaction to show that life has its and downs. The rain showed the sadness of life. By letting one see, that all your hopes and dreams ca be easily washed away in a blink of an eye. Remembering us that life is full with uncertain.

  14. Joe Dinkha - Post #3: Catherine Barkley's stay in the hospital is very rough. At first, her mental state of mind is that she is very calm and normal. Catherine's physical state is the same, she feels fine and isn't in pain at all. As this event goes goes on, the labor pains that Catherine has are excruciating, and she is totally worried about the status of whether the baby will live or die.

Lt. Henry's reactions towards this whole ordeal can be described as total concern, apprehension, and some doubt. He starts to question himself whether Catherine or the baby will survive. Things don't look good at all at this point. Catherine delivers a stillborn child, and then begins to bleed uncontrollably. This ultimately leads to Catherine's death seeing as the doctors and nurses couldn't help the tragic situation.

After everything, Lt. Henry is in the room alone, in the dark, saying one final goodbye to a "statue" of the lifeless body of Catherine Barkley. Lt. Henry then leaves in the rain. This is an ironic scene as the rain was a symbol of Catherine's biggest fear. Ernest Hemingway creates this ending to have it coincide with Catherine Barkley's main fear.

  15. Emily Sanders Post #3: During Catherine Barkley's stay at the hospital, she was physically not doing so well because of the baby. She was in pain and she was worn out. Her mental condition was better. She was optimistic about the delivery. She tells Henry she's not going to die. When the baby is about to come, it gets hard for her to handle the pain, but she still believes she will live and get better. After the delivery, Catherine has a hemorrhage. She knows she is going to die and she tells Henry that she loves him and that she's not afraid.

Henry is concerned for Catherine throughout the whole hospital stay. He was worried and scared. When Catherine died, Henry was crushed. He had no feelings for the baby because he saw that the baby is what killed her. He tried saying goodbye to Catherine but it did him no good. He states that it was like saying goodbye to a statue. Afterwards, he left and walked out into the rain. Hemingway created this reaction to show the relation between death and rain in the book.

Catherine’s labor pains begin late in the night and Lt. Henry moves her to the hospital by around 3 in the morning. In the beginning of her stay in the hospital she is excited. She wants to have a fast and easy delivery without any foolishness to be a good wife. “When the pains were bad she called them good ones. When they started to fall off she was disappointed and ashamed.” (pg. 314) After Lt. Henry comes back from breakfast he finds she’s been moved to the delivery room. They are giving her gas to ease the pain because the contractions are steadily increasing. By the time he comes back from lunch she has gone weak with the effort of pushing and the gas is not working any more to ease her pain. Catherine goes to pieces then because of the pain, she says she wants to die if only it would stop the pain and that she feels as though she is going to die anyway. Lt. Henry calms her down and the doctors decide to do a C-section operation to extract the baby. After the C-section Catherine is extremely gray and weak but happy now that it is over. The baby is dead. Lt. Henry realizes she is most likely going to die. The nurses make him go to dinner and when he comes back the doctors are with Catherine because she’s had a hemorrhage. When he goes in to see her he breaks down in tears while lovingly holding her hand. He knows she is going to die but does not want to believe that their time together is going to be gone forever. She says she knows she will die, that she is not afraid just hateful of her untimely departure. The nurses escort him from the room so the doctor can help her. She loses consciousness due to loss of blood and he stays with her till her heart gives its last beat of life. She progresses from ecstatic to hysterical, from strong to frail, from life to death.
Throughout the course of her delivery Lt. Henry just wants her to be happy and comfortable. He helps to give her the gas when the pain is too much, stays when she wants him by her side, and leaves when she wants him to. As it drags on he starts having the internal conflict of whether or not Catherine will die. He does his best to convince himself but I think in the back of his mind he knew that things had not gone right and that they will not end right either. The baby, his son, dies but all Lt. Henry can feel is hate because the child “killed” its mother. When Catherine finally dies he tries to say good-bye but cannot. “……it wasn’t any good. It was like saying good-by to a statue.” (pg.332) Lt. Henry leaves the hospital and does not look back. He cannot yet face what has happened so he just walks away. Catherine was afraid of the rain, she saw herself dying in it, and eventually she does die while it rains. I think Hemingway creates this reaction because it makes the reader wonder; it lets the reader tie up all the loose ends in the story the way the reader wants them to be. What will Lt. Henry do now that his love has died? Will he go back to the Italy and the military or will he be arrested? Will he find another girl that gives him a big healthy family? Will he drink himself to death? The reader decides.
