Describe the protagonist of the novel and explain his main goals in life at this point (list & elaborate on at least three). What are his main reasons for being in the Italian army and what is his position? Is he happy with his role thus far?

  1. Michael Young Post # 1: The protagonist of the story is very calm but seems to think that he is missing something out of his life. His first goal in life is to go to Abruzzi. After talking to the priest who seems to think he should go, he then realizes the priest was right and that he has never done or went anywhere or has never followed his dreams. His second goal is to make love with Miss.Barkley. He talks about how he wishes how he was back in Milan and that if he was he would take Miss.Barkley to a hotel and make love all night. His third goal in life in my opinion even though he does not admit it is that he wants to find happiness. He was told by the priest that he has not find true happiness even though he says he has and because of what the priest says I think he is going to try to look for it.

  2. Michael Young Post # 1 Continued: There were two main reasons why he was in the Italian army. To begin he was in Italy during that time the war was starting. Plus he spoke Italian so that and living in Italy made him eligible for the Italian army. His role in the Italian army was as an ambulance driver. But in a sense I think he likes being in the Italian army but does that mean he has not showed interest in joining the American army no he clearly has. But overall I think he is not happy with his role thus far except on the occasion of meeting Miss.Barkley but besides that he was injured on the job so I do not think he would be happy.

  3. Ashlee Frizzell- Post 1: The protagonist, Lt. Henry, is a man with a lot more to him than what people see. One goal Lt. Henry has is to take Catherine with him somewhere where they can live peacefully together. The second goal he has is to beat the Austrians in the war like the rest of the Italian army. He also is trying to figure out his place in the world and what he can do to make his life worthwhile. A main reason why he is in the Italian army is because even though he was an American, he was living in Italy and spoke Italian. The second reason for him being in the Italian army is because Henry does not agree with the American view on the war. His position in the army is an ambulance driver, and seems to act like he likes his role but I’m not entirely sure if he does or not.

  4. Shumel Ahmed- Post # 1: The protagonist of the story is Lt. Henry, he is a man that is missing something in his life. Lt. Henry is a calm but at times a selfish man. One goal that Lt. Henry has is to live with Catherine Barkley and to love and eventually marry her. Another goal of Lt. Henry is that he wants to return back to being an ambulance driver even after he is injured. His third goal is that he wants to beat the Austrians in the war. Lt. Henry is in the Italian army because he lives in Italy and speaks Italian and he also agrees with why the Italians are fighting. He does not agree with the Americans view on the war and wanted to be in the Italian Army, even though he is an American. Lt. Henry’s position in the Italian army is being an ambulance driver. I think that Lt. Henry is not happy with his role because he wants to have a more important role in the army then what he is currently doing.

  5. Asek Hussain-Post #1: The protagonist of the story is Lt. Henry or Signor Tetente as his comrades call him. He is an American who is volunteering for the Italian Army. One of his goals is to marry and make love to Catherine Barkley. Another goal of Lt. Henry is to win the war against the Austrians for Italy. His third goal is to be part of the Italian army after he recovers from injury. His current position is a supervisor for ambulance drivers in the Italian army. I believe Lt. Henry not happy with his current position because he wants to be in a bigger role for the Italian army. He seems happy, but on the inside he is not because of him being in the hospital.

  6. Andrew Hernandez-Post #1: In the Novel Farewell To Arms the protagonist of the story is Lieutenant Henry. The saying theres more than what meets the eye with this man, but many people do not recogize. Originaly Henry is an American, but there views on the was is different that he beilieves. This is the reason that he joins to fight in the Italian army, including the fact that he speaks Italian. One of his goals he would love ofcourse if for the Italians to become victorious over the Austians. He is in love with Catherine Barkely and hopes of marrying, loving, and living with her. He also would like to visit the one place that the priest had told him to go to, Abruzzi. Henry is an ambluance driver and hopes to become a very important asset to the victory of this war. He feels happy, but inside he truly feels useless to the war because he doesn't feel good about what he does for the war and that he is in the hospital.

  7. KeAndra Porchia Post#1: The protagonist of the novel is Lt. Henry, he is a layed back type of guy but at times can be kind of selfish. One of the main goals of Lt. Henry is to love and later on spend his life with Catherine Barkley. Another one of his main goals is to return back to driving the ambulance even though he is injured. Lt. Henry also wanted the Italian army to beat the Austrians in the war. The reason for this is because he agrees with some of the views of the Italian army even though he is really an American;this is one of the main reasons for him joining the Italian army. His position in the army is a ambulance driver. Lt. Henry seems to like his position as an ambulance driver; I don’t think he really cares.

  8. Amanda Gniewek Post#1: The protagonist of the novel is Frederick Henry. Frederick Henry is a disillusioned man of the modern world searching for some value or some sytem that he can believe in. Hes in the Italian Army because he agrees with them despise the fact that hes an American. Frederick Henry has two main goals. One of them is to start a life with Catherine Barkley because he obviously isnt getting into her pants. The other one is two become a hero in the army and try to make a bigger difference in the world then what he has. He wants to become more Major. His position right now is to be an ambulence driver, and although it helps to carry the wounded people to a hospital. I believe that he would like to have a bigger role in the war then just that. I mean Rinaldi is trying to give him a medal for being heroic but Frederick doesnt want it because he knows that there are other men who has done more heroic things than he, and it wouldnt be right. He just wants to have a better role in the war and begin a family with Catherine.

  9. Syri Clark Post#1: The protagonist of the story "Farewell to Arms", is Lt. Henry, he's a man who's trying to fulfill a empty void in his life. When it comes to facing his enemies on the line of battle, Lt. Hernry has the courage of great fighting warrior, but when it comes to making choices in life, Lt. Henry falls short, as being selfish as any man can become. Lt. Henry's first goal is that he wants to beat the Austrians in battle. His second goal is to pick his life again as a ambulance driver, even with the injury he obtain during the war. Lastly his thrid goal is to marry the true love of his life, Catherine Barkley, who's willing to share his new journey in holly matrimony.

Lt. Hnery, is a American, who doesn't believe or support the Americans views on the war. He only join the Italian army, because he speaks the lanuage, lives in Italy, and he believes in their cause. For Lt. Henry, Italy cause was worth fighting and dying for. Lt. Henry job in the Italian army is working in the medical corp., as ambulance driver, driving around wounded soldiers. In my eyes, Lt. Henry is not a happy with his role in the army, he wants something more than driving around soldiers fighting on the battlefield, he wants to be a soldier fighting on the battlefield.

  10. Seyadul Chowdhury Post#1: Ernest Hemingways, A Farewell to Arms, places Lt. Frederick Henry as the protagonist. One of the major goals he aspires to attain is to begin a life with the nurse, Catherine Barkley. Another goal Lietenant Henry desires to recover from his wounds and fight alongside the Italians. Finally a long term goal that he reaches out for is victory in the war against the Austrians. His main reason for being in the Italian Army is because he resides in Italy and can speak fluent Italian, this is proven when Henry says,"I was in Italy, and I spoke Italian." (Hemingway 22) Lt. Henry's position in the Italian army is an ambulance driver. I do not believe he is completely satisfied with his role in the war because he wishes to play a larger role.

  11. Joe Dinkha - Post #1: The protagonist of the novel is Lieutenant Frederick Henry. He's a relaxed American in Italy as an ambulance driver for the Italian Army. He is in the Italian Army because he lives in Italy and speaks the Italian language. I believe that he enjoys what he does (especially since he favors Italy to win in the war). One of his goals is to become a bigger part in the Italian Army so he can be more proud of himself, and feel worthy of respect and honor. Another goal of his is to marry the love of his life, Catherine Barkley. The third goal of his is to win the war against the Austrians. Lt. Henry is obviously on the Italian side of the war, even though he is really an American.

  12. Jesse Jones post#1: The protagonist of Farewell to arms is a normal guy who is liked very much by his peers. His goals in life are to have a physical relationship with Miss Barkley, which he talks of very often when he wishes he can take her to Milan. Also, to go to Abruzzi. He feels he missed out on a lot by not going. The two main reasons for being in the Italian army are that he speaks fluent Italian and he was Italy at the time. In the Italian army he is an ambulance driver and drives the wounded back from the front line. I believe him not to be happy with his life at this time. He shows some happiness when he is around Miss Barkley, but it is not really real because he is not getting what he wants.

  13. Hannah Kriss post#1: Frederic Henry is an American who is serving as a leiotenant in the Italian Army. As quoted earlier by Jesse Jones, he is very respected and liked by his peers in the Italian Army. Lt.Henry has but three goals in his life. One is to- after getting to know her- be with Ms. Barkley. They get close in the first book. Henry's second goal is not to find glory in the Austrians but to help the cause and defeat them. He thinks that their deeds have been dishonorable. His third goal is to live through the war so he can do anything he wants to. Lt. Henry doesn't like the US's reasons and views for entering the war. he can also speak Italian very fluently. Lt. Henry's post in the war is an ambulance driver. He likes this post because he is at the front and he can help the men.

  14. Samadul Chowdhury post#1: In Ernest Hemingway's Farewell to Arms, lieutenant Frederic Henry is the main protagonist of the novel, he is a calm type of person who is an ambulance driver in the Italian army. His main goals in life so far are to get a stable relationship with Catherine, win the war, and to get a higher rank in the army to be able to help win the war. The two main reasons for him being in the war are because he was living in Italy and he could speak Italian, as I previously stated his position in the army is an ambulance driver. I think he's happy with his position in the army because he could help people that are getting hurt in the war, but he would be more satisfied if he had a larger role to help people.

  15. Emily Sanders post #1: In 'A Farewell to Arms', Lt. Frederic Henry is the protagonist. One of his goals is to stay with Catherine. He loves her and wants to be with her forever. Another one of his goals is to help win the war. He wants peace and also wants the war to be over. His position is an ambulance driver in the Italian army. Although he is American, he is with the Italians because he lives in Italy and can speak the language. He doesn't like the American's views on the war. Although the Italians and Americans are on the same side, he would rather be with the Italians. I don't think that he is happy with his role thus far. He tells Catherine that he wants a larger role and a higher ranking. He tells someone else that he has killed plenty of Austrians, even though he hasn't. He wants to be honored for killing Austrians. I don't think that Lt. Henry thinks that he is much of a help sitting on the sidelines helping soldiers. He wants to be doing something bigger and better than driving an ambulance. I think that he is trying to find a happier life for him and Catherine.

The protagonist of the novel, A Farewell to Arms, is Lt. Frederick Henry. He is an American serving in the Italian army as an ambulance driver. He is a man that faith and honor mean nothing to, or so he tries to show. He does not care for recognition or glory so long as he can do his job. I think that Lt. Frederick Henry is a good man who is willing to do what he can for his fellow soldiers, lend out money to a friend, and try to not cause trouble. Lt. Henry goals in life thus far seem to be to enjoy life. He wants to travel the world while exploring new cultures, testing the foods, and tasting the wines. He and the priest talk many times about the places that he should visit when he gets the chance. He also wants to marry Catherine Barkley, the English nurse he met before he was injured. Catherine was originally meant to be a one night stand to satisfy his hormonal cravings, but somehow Lt. Henry could not stop coming back to her. Their relationship becomes something more and before he realizes it he has found himself madly and passionately in love with this woman. Lt. Henry’s last goal in life seems to be to find the place in the world where he truly belongs, be it Italy, America, or someplace unthought-of (ex: traveling the world as well as being American in Italian army). Even though the main character is an American he felt no real patriotism for America, therefore he did not join the American army. When the war began he was in Italy and he knew the language; it happened to be a case of being in the right place at the right time under the right circumstances. I believe that Lt. Henry is not happy yet, but that eventually when he can walk proudly away from the Italian army with Catherine Barkley in his arms as his wife he will be.
