1. Examine why Catherine is afraid of the rain. What is she afraid of and why isn't she afraid when she is with Lt. Henry??

2. Explain why Lt. Henry has a hard time distinguishing between reality and illusion.

  1. KeAndra Porchia Post#2: In the novel Hemingway uses the rain to symbolize death. Catherine is afraid of the rain because as quoted in the book, “I’m afraid of the rain because sometimes I see me dead in it.”She is afraid of death. Catherine isn't afraid when she is with Lt. Henry because she knows that he will not let anything happen to her and she knows he loves her. She also states that she sometimes see him dead in it too.

Lt. Henry has a hard time distinguishing between reality and illusion because he has been in this war and he has been through so much. He has experienced numerous of deaths and this may have messed up his mind a little. Now that he is with Catherine and he is starting to feel different emotions he doesn't know what to make them out to be. He can't really tell if it is reality or an illusion in his mind.

  2. Terra Jones Post#2: In the Novel Catherine states that she is afraid of the rain. There are two reasons why; the first reason is because she sees her, and at times Lt. Henry, dead in it; the second reason is because she says that it is "hard on loving" meaning that the rain devastate things between lovers. She believes that the rain will ruin the relationship that she has with Frederic or that one of them will lie dead in it(Foreshadowing). She is not afraid when she is with Frederic because as she believes, no one can help themselves but they can protect one another.

Lt. Henry has a hard time distinguishing reality between illusion because of the things that have happened in his life before. As stated in the last blog he has been through a lot and does not believe he is worthy of much; so when something good comes along such as his love, he can not believe it. The war, his relationship, and alcohol make things worst. He has to fight at the front which could serve as his reality, but then return to his love and happiness now and again which could serve as his illusion. His relationship with Catherine complicates things because, once again, he can not believe it. She constantly says she will give him what he wants, so in their relationship he does get what he wants, but in reality he does not. They also, together, pretend things, and talk about what could or should be. They both use their relationship for comfort during hard times, pretending that their love is genuine. The alcohol in which he uses for comfort, makes him feel better about his reality and puts him in a good mood thus for disconnecting him from his reality and pushing him toward his illusion. None of the three things help him distinguish the two harsh parts of his life.

Henry is having a hard time between relaity and illusions because hes afraid of whats real and what isn't real. Lt. 4. Shumel Ahmed Post #2: Catherine is afraid of the rain because of what she notices of the rain. When Catherine looks into the rain she pictures herself and Lt. Henry dead in it. Catherine is afraid of the rain because she believes that their relationship will end because she or Lt. Henry will die. Catherine is not afraid when she is with Lt. Henry because Catherine feels that when Lt. Henry is with her, he will not let anything bad happen to her. She feels safe with him because she trusts that he will protect her from anything harming her. She believes that no one can help themselves, but they can protect one another.

Lt. Henry has a hard time distinguishing between reality and illusion because he has been through so much in his life, he thinks that he is not worthy of anything. Lt. Henry can not believe that the love between him and Catherine is real because of everything that he has been through. He witnessed many deaths, he drank a lot of alcohol and believes that it will make him feel better. He has lost a little touch with reality from drinking so much and witnessing harsh things. Lt. Henry and Catherine both use each other to talk about things that could be, they talk to each other and they comfort one another through the hard times.

  5. Andrew Hernandez Post#2: Catherine notes that she is afraid of the rain and she could see dead in it. She also says she sees Henry dead in it as well. Catherine is afraid of herself or Henry dead and it would end their relationship. When Henry is around her she feels safe and protected. Catherine also says that no one can protect themselves, so Henry and Catherine help each other.

Lt. Henry has a hard time distinguishing between reality and illusion because of all the things he has been through. He has seen many people die and believes that his love with Catherine cant be real because of everything he has seen. He can't tell that if it's fake or real and the alcohol does do anything good for him at this point

  6. Asek Hussain Post#2: Catherine is afraid of the rain because she believes it will lead to her or Lt. Henry’s death. She believes they won’t be together because of the rain. She isn’t afraid when she’s around Lt. Henry because she feels safe around him. Lt. Henry wouldn’t allow any harm to come to Catherine. Catherine believes no one can help themselves but they can protect one and another.

Lt. Henry has a hard time distinguishing between reality and illusion because he has been through a lot lately in his life. He believes he isn’t worthy of much. His drinking is one of his main problems why he cant distinguish reality and illusion. Lt. Henry has witnessed many deaths and wars throughout his life. He believes his relationship with Catherine can do good for him.

  7. Ashlee Frizzell post 2:

Catherine is afraid of the rain because she says she sees death in it. When it rains she has thoughts about her and Lt. Henry not being able to be together because if they got married they would send her back to her country. She is not afraid when she is with Henry because he says to her that he’s her protector and would not let anything harm her or come in between them. Lt. Henry has been in the army for numerous years, there for has killed many. Those deaths have taken effect to his brain and believes that what he is imagining is reality; this has happened in real life to soldiers once they come back from war.

  8. Samadul Chowdhury Post #2: In Earnest Hemingways novel, Catherine Barkley is afraid of the rain. The rain symbolizes death, and she is afraid because she sees Frederic and herself dead in it. She isn't afraid when she is with Henry because she knows that they aren't dead and also because they can protect eachother. Lt. Henry has a hard time distinguishing between illusion and reality because of two factors. The first is because of all that's happend to him, meeting Catherine, the bombing, and being in the hospital, all of them are too much for him to comprehend as reality. The second reason is because he's been drinking a lot of alcohol ever since he's been in the hospital, most likely to make the time pass by.

  10. Seyadul Chowdhury Post#2: Ms. Barkley assure the reader that she dreads the presence of rain when she says "All right. Im afraid of the rain because sometimes I see me dead in it." (Hemingway 126) She also declares that she sees Lt. Henry dead in it. The rain is a symbolic figure of death. She feels the rain will tear them apart. Catherine's fear is driven away when Lt. Henry is within her reach because she believes they can protect each other from harm and that no one can just help themselves.

Lt. Henry has difficulty rendering reality from illusion because of all the things he has seen from war. He has witness countless numbers of deaths as well as come close to his own. It would be hard for anyone to recover after seeing so much misfortune. After all the afflictions he has been through it is strenous to accept positive events as reality. An example of this is for him to finally find true love with Catherine.

  11. Joe Dinkha - Post #2: Catherine Barkley is frightened by the rain because it's a representation of death to her. So mainly, it's death that she is afraid of. She imagines herself dead in the rain, and sometimes with Lt. Henry too. Catherine Barkley isn't afraid of anything when she's with Lt. Henry though. This is because she feels a strong sense of protection and safety when she is with him.

Lt. Henry's lack of properly comprehending reality from illusion is clearly because of the traumatic events that have occurred in the war. He was in a near-death experience when a bomb went off by him, he's seen many of his men die, and has been stressed about deserving respect and honor. With him getting a negative habit of drinking, it seems as if his love for Catherine Barkley is the only positive sense of reality he can understand.

  12. In the novel, Catherine revel the reasons why she is afraid of the rain. There are two reasons why; first, she states in the book, “I’m afraid of the rain because sometimes I see me dead in it.” Second, she also quoted from the book, “But it’s very hard on loving.” In addition Catherine says sometimes she sees Lt. Henry dead in the rain too. Catherine isn’t afraid of the rain when she is with Lt. Henry, she knows that he really loves her and, because he’s her knight in shining armor that will not let anything happen to her.

The reason why Lt. Henry had a hard time distinguishing between reality and illusion is because he didn’t want to face the hardship around him. It was much easier living in a dream world, were no one gets hurt, no one dies, and love is real and painless. Lt. Henry use alcohol to keep his self in that state of mind, numbing away any fear or pain that he might feel. To him life was simple when you didn’t feel it. Catherine offered a glimmer of hope of a world that he always wanted to live in. That’s why he accepted the love she offered, to him it was another drug use to escape from life harsh reality.

  13. Hannah Kriss Post #2: In Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, the character Catharine falls in love with Lt. Henry. While Henry is in the hospital, she confesses to him one night that she is afraid of the rain. Ond of her reasons for her fear is that it symbolizes death in her mind. Another reason is that she often sees herself with Henry in the rain. But in addition to that she sees Henry dead from the war. She's not afraid of the rain when Henry's around because she knows he will protect her and that he is okay.

Lt. Henry has a hard time separating reality from illusion. One reason for this could be that he is in the hospital because of his wound and the medecine makes him have a hard time. Another reason is that he is so far in love with Miss Barkley that he goes so far as imagining her sometimes. Lt. Henry also drinks a lot to STAY in his illusions. He like the world when it works that way.

  14. Emily Sanders Post #2: In A Farewell to Arms, Catherine Barkley is afraid of the rain. When it rains, she thinks of death. She also sees Lt. Henry and herself dead in the rain. When Henry is with her, she is not scared because she feels safe with him and she feels that he will protect her from any harm and that he is also safe.

Lt. Henry has a hard time distinquishing reality and illusion because of all the traumatic things that have happened to him. Alcohol and medicine may also be partly to blame. He likes so much what he sees in illusions that he thinks and hopes that it's real. He doesn't want to feel any pain or stress, and imagining things is the easiest way for him to do that.

  15. Michael Young Post#2: In the book A Farewell to Arms their is a sense of fear in Catherine Barkley. Catherine is afraid of the rain and the reason being is because it reminds her of death. Now in the book she does say this fear out loud. The reason why in my opinion she does not fear the rain when she is with Lt.Henry is because she loves him and feels safe with him. All in all you do feel safe when you are with people you love.

There are many opinions on why Lt.Henry can not distinguish between illusion and reality. My opinion is this, it is war time, their is lots of drinking going on and he is really stressed. Plus he has gotten hurt in the battlefield and I know that impacts alot about how you see the world. You know i also think that his daydreaming about Catherine may be another reason why he cannot distinguish between reality and disillusion. So maybe the war in general impacts him in distinquishing the two.

    P.S Dear Mrs.Davis,
Sorry for not posting this on time. Even though I am busy I should know better to fit this in my schedule. So I have no excuse.
    Sincerely
